INVASIVES OUT - NATIVES IN

Help the BPA with invasives management and habitat restoration. Details and sign up.

ADOPT A SPOT

Picture
Throughout the summer and fall, we help keep Burnham Park clean through the Adopt a Spot program supported by Morristown's Clean Commmunities. Volunteers sign up for weekly slots to remove litter from the park. The task is simple: walk through the park at your convenience and pick up trash. Separate out the recycling and place the filled trash bags in trash cans located in the Park. Look for sign up form in June 2022.

Burnham Park Arbor Day - June 2022 date / time TBA

Burnham Park Master Plan Town Meeting - TBA June 2022
The town of Morristown is developing a Master Plan for Burnham Park put together by Maser Consulting Engineering with input from Morristown officials, the Shade Tree Commission, BPA, other stakeholders and the public. Invasives Management & Habitat Restoration - Fieldwork May 25 2022
Last winter we removed invasives and reseeded with native grasses and flowers in Jones Woods and the Green Strip (wooded area between East and West Lake Blvds). Today, we follow up with more invasives removal and the planting of annuals to give the area some cover allowing the perennials to grow and flower in future years.  Let us know if you would like to join us.

PAST EVENTS

Invasives Out - Natives In
March 27
An intrepid crew of BPA volunteers de-vined trees and removed invasives in Burnham Park despite the wind, the snow flurries and an impressive amount of thorns.

Winter 2021-2022

An Invasives Management team of volunteers removed invasives and reseeded with meadow flowers and grasses in Jones woods and the Green Strip (wooded area between East and West Lake Blvds) as part of an ongoing management and habitat restoration project.  Please let us know if you would like to participate.

You've Been Flocked - summer 2021
A non-native flock of birds migrated to the neighborhood, settling in different locations every week. Observant neighbors had fun finding these rare birds every week.  The BPA coordinated the movement of the flock and encouraged creative TLC to help the flock adjust to their new habitat.

BioBlitz Morris Nature Festival June 2021
The Whippany River Watershed Action Committee and the Morris County Park Commission collaborated on BioBlitz, a free event focusing on environmental education, stewardship and community building. Activities for all ages included bird watching, naturalist walks, stream water assessment demonstrations, entertainment... and snakes! The BPA was a sponsor with many members volunteering and exhibiting. The BPA was honored with a plaque presented by the WRWAC.

Morristown Arbor Day in Burnham Park May 2021
The town of Morristown celebrated Arbor Day by planting trees in the Morristown pool area of Burnham Park. The BPA sponsored two trees and joined Mayor Dougherty, the Shade Tree Commission, Morristown arborist Rich Wolowicz, two councilwomen and the Burnham Park heirs for the tree planting. News Bee feature.

Native Plant Sale May 2021
The Great Swamp Watershed Association and it's partners - the BPA, ten towns and other community organizations - gave out a selection of native perennials with simple guidance for planting delightfully alive pollinator gardens that would thrive with minimal care. The online sale was a huge success - look for pollinator gardens throughout the region!

Adopt a Spot in Burnham Park 2020
The BPA organized an Adopt a Spot clean up program in Burnham Park in collaboration with Morristown's Clean Communities. Volunteers selected weekly slots from June-Oct for cleaning up litter in the Park. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Thank you to Smith Design on nearby Budd Street for adopting the Burnham Park sign, planting flowers around it an
d helping to maintain the plot throughout the summer.

Green Strip Clean Up Apr  2020
At the 2020 annual Spring Cleaning in and around the forested area between East and West Lake avenues, including the maintained trail, people picked up garbage on their own time, with their own gloves and bags, while social distancing. Don't forget to walk along the trail through the middle of the strip!

Jones Woods Trail Hike - Oct 13, 2019
Trailmaster Rick Bye led a hike on the trails in Jones Woods on a glorious fall day. Kids, dogs and adults enjoyed nature and learned about the history and landmarks in the area. (Did you know there were once 3 reservoirs?)

Movie Night, Wednesday, July 2019: Over 100 people gathered together to watch Dumbo at our first annual Free Movie Night held in Burnham Park, offered through the collaboration of the Town of Morristown and the BPA.
